# UK Manufacturing: 129,839 Companies, 3,433 Score 70+ for Exit Readiness

Manufacturing has the oldest ownership base of any sector in our database. Percentage of directors over 60: 30.6%. Average tenure: 10.3 years. Both figures are the highest of any sector we track.

This isn't a future problem. It's a current one. We analysed 129,839 UK manufacturing companies through the Exit Stack — now including food and beverage manufacturers alongside precision engineering, electronics, chemicals, and every other manufacturing sub-sector. 3,433 score 70+ for exit readiness — and the demographic pressure behind that number is intensifying every year.

Manufacturing also has the strongest balance sheets. Median assets of £93,708 — more than double the UK average of £43,167. SME-capped average of £901,509. These are real businesses with real assets, built over decades by owners who are now running out of runway.

What we analysed

We pulled every active UK manufacturing company — 129,839 in total — covering precision engineering, metal fabrication, plastics, packaging, chemicals, electronics, machinery, textiles, furniture, print, marine, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and food and beverage manufacturing (bakeries, breweries, distilleries, dairy, and meat processing). Food and beverage is covered in additional depth in our dedicated F&B analysis.

Manufacturing is the most established sector by incorporation date. 19,626 companies (15.6%) were incorporated before 2000 — the highest proportion of any sector. Another 22,352 (17.8%) were formed between 2000 and 2010. Nearly a third of the sector has been trading for more than 15 years.

The ownership picture

This is where manufacturing stands apart from every other sector.

Nearly one in three manufacturing company directors is over 60. And 8,540 companies have a sole director over 60 with 15+ years of tenure and no succession infrastructure — the most acute succession profile of any sector.

The single-director rate (54.8%) is below the UK average of 61.2% — manufacturing businesses are more likely to have co-directors or family members involved, reflecting the collaborative nature of production operations. This is positive for acquirers: more internal structure means smoother transitions.

What this means for searchers

Manufacturing is the sector where the succession thesis is strongest in the data. The oldest directors, the longest tenure, the heaviest balance sheets, and a 3.9% exit-ready rate.

Of 129,839 companies, 3,433 score 70+ for exit readiness. The ideal acquisition target — sole director aged 60–70, 15+ years tenure, meaningful assets — narrows the pipeline to 3,380 companies.

If you want asset-backed acquisitions: Manufacturing is the place. Median assets of £93,708 means real equipment, premises, and retained earnings.

If you want the densest pipeline: Precision engineering (5.5% exit-ready rate), packaging (5.4%), and plastics (5.3%).

If you want defensible niches: Look for certifications — AS9100 (aerospace), ISO 13485 (medical), IATF 16949 (automotive). Each creates a barrier to entry that transfers to a buyer.
